Different Kinds of Sailing Boats

DeterminingRightOfWayTreeIf you are planning on buying a sailing boat it is very important that you know about the various options available before you make a choice. There are a number of different sailing boats for you to choose from and choosing the right one is going to depend largely on knowing which type of boat you want.

Types of boats

Dinghy

This is the smallest sailing boat. It can accommodate a couple of people at the most. They can be transported on trailers and could be stored on racks too. They could be anywhere between 2 and 6 meters long. This is a great boat to learn how to sail in. Everything about it is simple. They are light to handle and easy to get too.

Keelboats

They have weighted keels under their hulls to prevent them from capsizing. They’re bigger than dinghies and are stored on moorings at marinas. They’re more stable than dinghies too but require a crew and a skipper.

Sail Cruisers

These are medium to large boats and are also called yachts. They also have heavy keels underneath them. They come with beds, a toilet and even a kitchen. They are meant for overnight trips or you could even consider living on them. They can be used for racing as well.

Trailer Sailer

These are keelboats which have heavy weighted keels to help keep them upright. They also have retractable keels which allow you to store them or move them using trailers. They are suited for inshore water, large lakes or rivers. Sports boats are a type of trailer sailer meant for people who are looking for an exhilarating performance.

Powerboat

They come in a number of different shapes and sizes. Some of them are better suited for day trips while others are suited for overnight passages. The large powerboats are also called motor cruisers.
